How To Read The Live Fire Map

This tool lives at 3dfire.jbf.com.

Every column is one active wildfire of 100 acres or more, fetched live from the National Interagency Fire Center the moment this page loaded. The column grows with the total acres burned and its color says how contained the fire is — until you change what either one means, in the legend. Where crews have mapped the real burned footprint, that perimeter is drawn on the ground in the same color — zoom close and the true shape rises to carry the height itself.

HeightYour Choice

Acres burned to start. Switch it in the legend to people within ten miles, homes within ten miles, crew on the fire, or homes destroyed. Height grows with the square root of the measure, so the largest towers without erasing the small ones.

ColorYour Choice

Percent contained to start — red uncontained, green nearly out. Switch it to any other measure and the ramp flips: green is fewest, red is most. Gray always means never reported.

The shapes are the actual mapped burn areas from interagency GIS crews, not circles.

Reading The Record

Live Means The Feed, Not The Flames

  • The numbers come from IRWIN, the interagency incident system. Size and containment are updated by incident staff, so they can lag the fire itself by hours — sometimes a day on small incidents.
  • Gray columns report no containment figure. That is a fact about reporting, not the fire — this map never treats missing data as 0%.
  • Fires under 100 acres are not shown. Many never get a mapped perimeter; their columns stand on the incident point instead.
  • When a fire is fully contained it leaves the national feed, so this map is always a picture of right now, not a history.

Every Fire Links Onward

Select any fire and its record offers Track on Watch Duty — the volunteer-run incident tracker firefighters and evacuees actually use. The link resolves to that specific incident when Watch Duty knows it, and falls back to a scoped search when it does not.

The Full Record

Two Sources, Kept Apart

  • Incident Facts is the IRWIN incident record — acres, containment, crews, homes and structures destroyed, injuries and deaths, fuel, cost and who is managing it. Its stamp says when incident staff last touched it.
  • Mapped Perimeter is the WFIGS geometry — the fire's outer edge as crews last mapped it. It is not a damage footprint, and its acreage is measured differently from the incident's, so the two are never merged into one number.
  • A number nobody reported reads Not reported. Unknown is never printed as zero: "no injuries reported" and "no injuries" are different claims.
  • People Within 10 Miles filters to the fires with population around them, from a daily count of who lives around each mapped perimeter. Turn a tier on and the rail re-ranks by people instead of acres. A fire that count has not reached steps out of view rather than passing as empty country.
  • Map labels name the biggest fires on screen and put the full read-out beside the fire you selected. Turn them off under Map Labels in the legend.
